Aunty’s Place at the end of the road was not just shelter, but also a treasury of memories and secrets. Aunty Lani Anela begins her story with her unique voice that brings the reader back to the 60s, to the quiet coast town of Kihei, Maui—when tall buildings and multitudes of season visitors were practically nonexistent. We attend a graduation, a wedding and a funeral in the local style. We watch the kids grow up, and relate to the adults as they cope with their own maturity. We learn why Asa Kukini turns to his Primo Beer to satiate his passion for his culture, why Koloe runs to his brother for security, and why she leaves her only son with Aunty Lani. We witness the changes that the aunties, uncles and kids adapt to accordingly, either in personal storms or physical ones. This short novel is about place, community, and hearts related through bloodline and otherwise. And are there really such things as ghosts?

I loved this book. I've never lived in Hawaii, but I've spent about six months of my life taking vacations in the islands over a period of 20 years. So when this title popped up in a search, I had to snap it up. Written by a local and set on Maui, the book has the unique flavor of true kama`aina family life (as far as I can tell, anyway).

In some respects, though, it's as hard to read as Huckleberry Fin; much of the dialog and all of Aunty's narrative is in pidgin. You practically have to be bilingual to read the flow. Fortunately for me, while I had to look up a few of the Hawaiian words (thank you, Jackie, for the glossary at the end of the book -- it saved me having to thumb through my copy of Pukui & Elbert), I could mostly follow the story. Your mileage may vary.

The characters are sharply in focus and realistic and the story is engrossing. What more can a reader ask for?

It was nice to revisit places I've been and especially the foods I've enjoyed, too. But now, I want to hop a plane so I can get some ono poi.

Aunty Place Jackie Pias Carlin 9781500258986 Books Reviews

I live on Maui and loved this book, not only for the familiar "sites" but also the story, the dialogue, the "realness" of it all. Even I had to look up some of the pidgin, so was grateful for Jackie Carlin's list in the back. Jackie is also a well known artist on Maui and the cover was her own work, which I also really liked. For anyone interested in "real life" on Maui, not just tourist impressions, I highly recommend this book. For others who just want a good read, regardless of the setting, again highly recommended! Rumor has it that Jackie is writing another book. Can't wait!
