This seems to be about the only book the author has written although she is well known for her many TV series. You laugh, you cry and you think. As I listened to this on of cassettes in the car, I was able to hear all the dialects etc . I think listening would be even better than reading for that reason. If you come across the book or an audio, please try it. I think all types of readers would enjoy.

Liberating Paris A Novel Linda Bloodworth Thomason 9780060596736 Books Reviews

I loved every minute of this book. It touched my heart. I experienced so many emotions and identified with these characters in a rare way for me. I believe the author is extremely talented and I, for one, will be waiting for all books and movies she has to offer.
Except for the couple chapters of sexual encounter descriptions, which were totally unnecessary to the story, I'd qualify this as one of the best character studies I have read in the memorable past. Just skim the sex chapters for plot and skip the details and you will love it!
Admittedly I am only on the third disc of this fantastic book on cd, but already I find that I can't wait to get into my car and drive just so that I can keep listening! I have already burst out laughing on several occasions while listening, and the humor comes so unexpectedly that it really catches you off guard, especially when delivered by the Julia Sugerbaker-esque narrator, with her charming and authentic Southern drawl. I am thoroughly enjoying this book, thanks, in part, to the spectacular narration. I would recommend this book in any format, but I feel that if you read it yourself rather than go for the audio version you will be depriving yourself of one of the things that make this such a wonderful experience. Imagine, if you will, just reading the script of an episode of Designing Women. Much of the brilliance of the show was in the delivery of the lines by the individual characters. I think that this book is probably the same - it would be a really good read, but Cynthia Darrow's narration makes it an absolutely fantastic gem of a book!
I liked the description of the social structure in the small town named Paris. The acceptance of all residents regardless of social, educational, physical or sexual levels or persuasion. And the struggle to keep the small shops from being destroyed from "progress and modernization". Easy, fast and interesting reading.
The book was so realistic of American small towns that I found it hard to put down. You found yourself right there and felt this was really happening. When large box stores come in and pop and mom businesses end up going out of business is a common theme in American small towns. The people whose lives are entwined in their town and each others. It will keep you alert and wanting to see how these two events interminable. It is for mature readers.
I don't think you have to be southern to appreciate this book, but to really appreciate it you probably need to be from a small town. I felt like a grew up with these folks. I knew them all. I know all about the small town that is disappearing because of the big box store. It touched my heart. It made me laugh and cry. I loved it!!
A good-hearted book, which I listened to as an audiobook. The reader, Cynthia Darlow, was fantastic, and brought all the characters to life - men and women. It was rather difficult to believe in such a tolerant town in the South, but if you can suspend that disbelief, it might make you feel more optimistic about the future.
This seems to be about the only book the author has written although she is well known for her many TV series. You laugh, you cry and you think. As I listened to this on of cassettes in the car, I was able to hear all the dialects etc . I think listening would be even better than reading for that reason.
