I read a review of this book a year or so ago and didn't start the series because of it. I will never let that happen again. Cameron with The Red Knight, weaves a spell on your very soul. Heartfelt brilliance. This is what a story is meant to do. Capture your imagination and take you down roads into the deepest places in your heart. I have not wept from a story in years. During the last 75 pages of this book I found tears rolling down my face over and over. I'd stop, then a small passage, written so simply, but with such feeling would start me up all over again. This is what life is about!

I hope my review will help another avid Fantasy veteran pick up this book. Absolutely fantastic! I hope the next books are just as good!

The Red Knight Miles Cameron 9780575113299 Books Reviews

NOTE I have not completed this book, currently I am at more than half and will revisit the review after I complete the book

It might be easy to compare this book to The Game of Thrones by George R R Martin however it would be more accurate to compare the book to the excellent series The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon, which Martin credits as his inspiration for GOT. Miles Cameron is also Christian Cameron who writes historical fiction and so it is more likely he also drew his influences from authors like Druon rather than Martin.

The attention to detail in some ways reminds me of C.S. Forester's Hornblower series. The descriptions of the warfare, the daily life and trials are meaty and convincing, as though the author has first hand knowledge... and apparently he does. After reading his profile I was not surprised to discover he is both an historian and a reenactor.

I found the characters engaging and I enjoyed the story greatly. After a couple of days of reading I realized I had found a new series I would follow but was also delighted to realize I was less than half way through the book. I do think some of the viewpoints could be dropped. I fear that he may make the same mistake that Martin makes in the later books of GOT with a plethora of characters no one likes or cares about getting too much attention at the cost of the story lines and plots you care about.

I am very excited about this series. To me it feels like an incredible classic in progress. Admittedly I felt the same way about Game of Thrones initially but feel this series could easily outclass GOT if the author avoids creating too many separate plot lines, characters and points of view. I have already been recommending this book to my friends. A definite buy.
There is a reason that there are so many books, styles, devices and voices in the fantasy genre. And there's a reason there are so many high mid-listers and best sellers representing such a diverse genre. The individual tastes of the readers are equally diverse. I concede that some readers are disappointed with "deep in the weeds" descriptions of armor, weapons, etc. I'll also concede that Cameron's Red Knight is set in a loosely re-configured Europa and for those interested in unconventional world building, that too, may be off-putting. However, in the end, story trumps all. And for that reason alone, I'm delighted by the book. I've read four of the installments in this series, and at this point, I can only wish that the author can find some way to maintain the franchise through another dozen installments. Spin-offs anyone?
The world is intriguing in that it is essentially a parallel earth. Interesting in that it mixes fantasy with Christianity. Not in a bashing you over head way, but Christianity exists in the world and there are priests, nuns, and an order of knights dedicated to it.
Magic system - I hate it when a book just very plainly states exactly how the magic system works, but this one was on the other end of the spectrum, just a little too aloof. It just jumps right in and I had no clue what I was reading because so much of the magic system has to do with another plane and him talking to someone in his head. It was weird, but once I got used to it, I understood what was going on and found it interesting and reasonably balanced.
the author must have done a TON of research into history and knights. He goes into excruciating detail about the armor and dress of people. I appreciate the research, but it is a bit much at times and acts more as filler than content that is relative to the story.
The main characters were interesting and well developed, but similar to GRRM, there are A LOT of characters in this first book and I did get confused as to who some of the minor people were.

All in all, I really liked this book and am burning my way through book #2

All in all I liked it. I am reading the second one now.
I'm pretty sure I've already left one positive review for the Red Knight - I've read it, and the 2nd book "Fell Sword" several times - hey, it's really hard to find a truly good book in this genre, so when you do, you have to make sure you've caught every nuance, every line of dialog that the author may have left a hidden, hinted at meaning, than when you tore through the book the first time, delighting in just reading good, solid fiction, with characters you can hate, love, feel sorry for, root for, some you hope get impaled on a 5 foot razor sharp broadsword - it really is that good. And there are nuances, and things not easily seen on the first hurried read, wallowing like a starving glutton finding himself locked in a candy store - read this book! That's all I can say - Miles Cameron is a surprise and a delight - I will go so far as to wager my reputation as a fair and honest reviewer of All Things (though I don't know that anyone but myself knows I have a reputation, lol) that if you enjoy the sword, sorcery, dragon, elf, Lord and serf genre of fantasy, you will love this book! Read it! Then rush out (or fire up that PC) and buy the 2nd one - it's even better. And just in time! The 3rd book of the "Traitor Son Cycle" comes out in one week! So read it fast, you'll love it, and be just in time to call in sick to work next Tuesday and read the last installment in this trilogy - it really is that good! Honest!
