The author describes very well the hope and trust that the budding Venezuelan society of the 1920s had in the power of education and rule of law to “tame” the vices of archaic social and power structures. Very sobering to read this beautiful book against the backdrop of Venezuela’s current crisis.

The novel itself is interesting if a bit dated in terms of social sensibilities. The missing stars however are because this version is crappily handled with weird line breaks and occasional errors that detriment the reading experience. It's dirty cheap but so would be a used version from a reliable publisher.
Doña Barbara represents the contrast between civilization and barbarism; contrast that can not be better represented but by the lives of the llaneros... Doña Barbara in one hand represents the barbaric spirit and ways of Latin America while in the other hand you have Santos Luzardo who represents the civilizing force of progress, fighting for the future, for the soul of Marisela... Definitely a must read, Doña Barbara was the first Latin American best seller, and occupies its place along with other great spanish novels like One Hundred Years of Solitude and Don Quixote...
Awesome book, especially for those who know about the culture. Gallegos uses an amazing array of rich autochthonous vocabulary that makes you either read alongside with a Spanish dictionary on hand and learn a lot, or guess the meaning from the context and master that skill.

Either way, it is an amazing story that shows imageries of the incredibly beautiful Venezuelan plains.
La calificación no es por la obra, Doña Barbara se me merece 100 estrellas. Es la edición la que falla. La letra es microscopica. No se puede leer.
La novela es magnífica (la leí en otro tiempo), pero esta edición tiene la letra diminuta, imposible de leerla cómodamente. Doy una estrella a la edición no a la novela!
“Doña Barbara” is a must read, I loved it BUT stay away from this particular edition, published by Stockcero, Inc. I have NEVER read a novel with so many typographical errors. At first I thought that it might be the author doing something different but then I compared it to other editions and hence the proof that this book was very poorly proofread. There are at least 20 typos and not only are they obvious but they sometimes leave you wondering what you are missing. Here are some examples C¡Que bonita eres,...(p88) / -ierto que,..(p206) / CMe he olvidado de mis...(p102) / -omprendiendo que,...(p245) / -on una misma suspicacia...(p255). It seems as if there was a problem with the letter C but trust me there were errors beyond these. Do read this book but not this edition.

Retrata el rezago que siempre ha existido en el campo de América Latina en cuanto a justicia, educación, agricultura etc. Novela centrada en Doña Bárbara, una mujer hermosa que el destino la hizo dura, fría y despiadada, y el amor que tenía guardado y que surgió al conocer al vecino de latifundio Santos Luzardo, que regresa déspues de años de exilio a vender sus tierras que habían sido saqueadas por ella.
